Tax-loss calculator

Enter each position you hold. We work out which are at a loss, whether each would be short- or long-term on your sale date, and what selling would do to your tax bill.

Holding period. A position is long-term if you sell it more than one year after the purchase date. Short-term losses offset gains taxed at your ordinary rate, so harvesting a loser before it turns long-term is usually worth more.

How much you can use. Losses first offset gains of the same type, then the other type. Up to $3,000 of net losses a year ($1,500 if married filing separately) can offset ordinary income, and the rest carries forward. The savings shown assume you have enough gains or income to absorb the full loss this year.

Wash sales. If you buy the same or a substantially identical security within 30 days before or after the sale, including in an IRA, the loss is disallowed for now and added to the new position's basis.

Current prices fill in automatically from the latest market close when you enter a ticker. You can type over them. Positions are saved in this browser only.
